What Colour Is the Soil – Music video launch can be seen here https://youtu.be/0tHZ4rNPKw8
This collaboration came about through meetings and conversations that took place while organising Mayo Africa Day 2022. Celesta Khosa, Ola Mustapha, Fathi Mohamed, Madhviram Sing and Breda Mayock explored ideas of personal, unique and shared experiences. The subject of soil came up through one of these stories. When Celesta arrived in Ireland, in her first phone conversation back home her mother asked her; ‘What colour is the soil?’.
It resulted in a song being written based on this question; ‘What colour, what colour is the soil? How does it feel, the earth’s skin, the skin you’re in?
Breda wrote and recorded the core of the song and recorded the women’s responses, Ola Mustapha, Christina Mkwada, Nono Ndlovu and Celesta Khosa composed their own parts. The word skin in spoken in many African languages and the women sing in their native tongue,
‘It’s the same sun we rise to you know’
‘the rain gives me peace’
‘this is the soil we’ve landed on’
‘We are on a Journey, May we get home safely’
And so we have this expression of the earth’s skin and of what it means to live in our own skins.
The video for this song has made especially for Mayo Culture Night 2022.
