This beautiful soundscape was created in 2017 by artist Camilla Fanning. Contributions from random passers-by on the Grand Canal are blended with interviews and archival recordings. Stream or download the soundwalk, and listen to it via your smartphone and headphones as you walk the route. It is as if you are listening to a series of companions who join you from time to time along your way as you stroll along the canal path.
Start at Lock C1 near the Northumberland Rd Bridge, and you’ll hit the halfway point at Lock C6 near Charlemont St Bridge. At this point the soundscape becomes less location specific, so you can turn back or continue.

Take a trip along Dublin’s Grand Canal as you’ve never seen it before with a screening of this new short film. The Circular Line, which runs between Ringsend and Suir Road on the Grand Canal, is one of Ireland’s most culturally important stretches of canal. Using the canal as a lens and a mirror on life, The Circular Line is a reflection of the city and its culture.
Presented by Waterways Ireland and director Luke McManus, The Circular Line explores the culture, atmosphere and beauty of a waterway that defines the boundary of Dublin’s south inner city. Made in collaboration with a team who live along the Circular Line, including visuals from cinematographer Paddy Jordan. The film’s soundtrack was created by electronic musicians Mount Alaska and the composer and violinist Sarah Lynch.
