Description:
‘Watch Over Us’ is an original piece of work directed by Dee Burke and Eric O’Brien. The production will focus on our interests in Irish superstitions of the 1930s and how superstitions were and are often our way of seeking outside intervention, the idea that superstitions hold power that can cancel out or override human choice and action.
In the Irish Free State between 1937-1939, approximately 740,000 pages (288,000 pages in the pupils’ original exercise books) of folklore and local tradition were compiled by pupils from 5,000 primary schools. Drawing on this archival material, members of Greise Youth Theatre, have looked at their own knowledge of folklore and stories about St. Brigid.
Brigid herself has been a figure used throughout history to watch over people. By invoking her name or emulating her virtues, people sought not only guidance but also a sense of security and reassurance in the face of life's challenges.
There will be three performances on Culture Night: 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. Booking is essential.
