Solas: A light installation by Joe Geaney

Solas

A light installation by Joe Geaney

Commissioned by Tipperary Arts Office for Culture Night 2020

‘Solas’ – the Irish word for ‘Light’ is a visual installation incorporating the use of LED bars within the Nenagh Castle grounds. The use of the word ‘Light’ in connection to the piece is both metaphorical as a sense of hope but also as a physical presence that the viewer can observe. The audience may walk through the castle grounds and reflect at the beacon of lights as they pass through. The lights will sync and un-sync in relation to each other. This ebb and flow is much like the patterns in our lives.

How To Make: Animal Mask Workshops

Online

On Culture Night we launch ‘How To Make’ with Visual Artist Aideen Barry.  Now that masks are a normal part of our everyday lives, join Aideen as she, in these simple workshops, shows children and young people how to make a simple face-mask. Think of each mask as a kind of disguise where you can become your favourite animal with a little bit of animation magic. The workshop is designed to get thinking about face-masks as a protection device during a time of Corona but also to make them fun and silly too.

In the videos which will be made available on the 7th and 14th October the artist will use some stop-motion techniques to turn her Face Mask into a Chameleons mouth lashing out and gobbling flies or as a cute but sneaky Fox finally getting its hands on the Ginger Bread Man.

Kids will learn how to create a simple no sew face mask at home with family or in school and then will add their own creative flair to make them different types of Animals. She will create 3 different types: A Chameleon, A Shark and A Fox, but she hopes you too will get creative and make your own kind of creature with super powers.

Finally there will be a LIVE stop-motion animation workshop with Aideen who will be in via Zoom on the 21st October where she will demonstrate how, using cheap stop-motion animation software, a smart phone and props you have to hand to make your ridiculously funny animations come to life. Children and their teachers and parents will be also able to ask Aideen Questions during the workshop.

Head on a journey by train from the Netherlands through the spine of Sweden to a very small island off the coast of Norway. Expect projections, images, musings, poems and insights into isolation and camaraderie. Presented as part of Tipperary Arts Office’s Culture Night programme.
