The Showbands’ Era

Athenry Arts & Heritage Centre

Enjoy the sounds of the Athenry Music School in the ambient setting of the Athenry Arts & Heritage Centre and the Market Square of the town. There will be strings, choirs and soloists for your listening pleasure and the programme will appeal to ages to enjoy including a special presentation of the Travellers’ Tales with Gliondar Community Arts Group.

Relive the magical time of Irelands Showbands during the 1950s, ’60s and 70’s presented by Francis Kennedy & Cha Taylor. Francis Kennedy writes a weekly page for Ireland’s Own magazine called ‘The Irish Bands’ Archive Scrapbook’, he has also had an 80-part series “Remembering The Showbands’ Era” published. Cha Taylor  lived and played during the era. Cha played bass for and toured Britain many times as a member of the Swingtime Aces showband between 1968 and 1972.

The presentation will include photos of the bands, posters and the background histories of the various bands of the time. The evening will also have a Q & A session for the audience to participate and engage with this unique event for Culture Night.
