The Kildare Folklore Pharmacy

Drop in Clinic

  • Whooping cough? You might need a ferret for that.
  • Bad back? Have you tried crawling under the hind legs of an ass?

On Culture Night, the Kildare Folklore Pharmacy will open its doors to the public with the aim of banishing the county’s aches and pains. Inside you will find Kildare’s only pharmacy that recommends keeping a seventh son of a seventh son on speed dial and that offers suggestions on identifying changelings. All of these cures have been compiled from records of folk medicine and healing in the Irish Folklore Archives.

During the opening, in-store ‘pharmacists’ will be on hand to diagnose visitors by reading potatoes before advising on treatment. Don’t be too surprised if their unorthodox prescriptions include a ferret, piebald horse, snail or a river dividing two counties. It’s highly recommended that you talk to your doctor before taking their advice!

The Kildare Folklore Pharmacy was conceived by Sheena Malone and will be activated by Aidan Halpin on Culture Night.
