For Culture night 2018 will host an exhibition of works from its art Collection, established in 1962 and comprising almost 1100 works of modern and contemporary Irish art.

The Arts Council Collection is committed to support artists' as they work today and to encourage public engagement with the arts. The exhibition will include a selection of recent examples from the Arts Council Collection showcasing the Council’s long history of purchasing excellent and ambitious works of art that reflect the practice of artists working in Ireland today.

For Culture night the Arts Council Collection will display a selection of works by Joy Gerrard, Anita Groener, Siobhan Hapaska, Eoin McHugh and an ambitious large scale installation Exquisite tempo sector, 2017 by Barbara Knezevic.

Information on the Arts Council Collection:

One of the most important National Collections in the country, the Arts Council Collection was established in 1962 and currently comprises almost 1100 works of modern and contemporary art spanning 1940 until the present day.

The Arts Council Collection coordinates a programme of exhibitions in cooperation with galleries and arts venues throughout the country as well as for lending for international exhibitions.

Approximately 50% of the Collection is on display across Ireland at any one time and the works are available for public organisations and bodies to borrow and showcase for the benefit of the public.

The Collection has the following mission:

‘The Arts Council’s collection supports artists’ and public engagement with the arts. It does this by purchasing excellent contemporary work to be enjoyed and valued through display and programmes delivered directly and with partners. Through the collection, the Arts Council also acts as a custodian and carer of great art on behalf of the people of Ireland.’
