Description:

The Art of Conversation is an exhibition of documentary portraits of the people of Lanesboro, Co. Longford.
Over the past few years, I have been photographing people from around the town. Alongside each portrait is a short snippet from a conversation we had, remembered afterwards and chosen because it captured something about the person or the moment we shared.

The photographs were taken in places that are familiar to each person, whether that was their home, workplace or somewhere that formed part of their everyday life. Together, the images and words offer a glimpse into the people who make Lanesboro what it is.

Many of those featured have lived in Lanesboro all their lives and have seen the town change over the years. Sadly, some have passed away since they were photographed, making these portraits an important record of people whose presence and stories remain part of the community.

This exhibition invites visitors to take their time, look beyond the photograph and read the words beside it. You may recognise a neighbour, a friend or someone you have known for years. My hope is that The Art of Conversation reminds us of the value of stopping to talk, to listen and to appreciate the people around us before those moments become memories.

Is taispeántas é ‘Ealaín na Comhrá’ de phortráidí doiciméadaithe de mhuintir Lanesboro, Co. Longfort. Le cúpla bliain anuas, bhí mé ag glacadh grianghraf de dhaoine ar fud an bhaile. In aice le gach portráid tá píosa beag as comhrá a bhí againn, cuimhneamh ina dhiaidh sin agus roghnaithe toisc gur ghlac sé rud éigin den duine nó den nóiméad a roinn muid. Tógadh na grianghraif i gceantair atá eolach ar gach duine, bíodh sin ina mbaile, in áit oibre nó áit a bhí mar chuid dá saol laethúil. Le chéile, tairgeann na híomhánna agus na focail spléachadh ar na daoine a dhéanann Lanesboro mar atá sé.

Tá go leor de na daoine a bhfuil siad le feiceáil anseo ina gcónaí i Lanesboro ar feadh a saoil go léir agus tá siad feicthe ag an mbaile ag athrú thar na blianta. Ar an drochuair, tá cuid acu imithe ar shlí na fírinne ó fuarthas a ngrianghraif, ag déanamh na portráidí seo ina thaifead tábhachtach d’fhir agus de mhná a bhfuil a láithreacht agus a scéalta fós mar chuid den phobal.

Tugann an taispeántas seo cuireadh do chuairteoirí a gcuid ama a ghlacadh, féachaint níos faide ná an grianghraf agus na focail atá in aice leis a léamh. B’fhéidir go aithneoidh tú comharsan, cara nó éinne a bhfuil aithne agat air le blianta. Tá súil agam go gcuimhneoidh The Art of Conversation orainn ar luach na stopadh chun labhairt, chun éisteacht agus chun meas a bheith againn ar na daoine mórthimpeall orainn sula mbíonn na chuimhneacháin sin ina cuimhní.
