“Death Notices” is an exciting new short documentary directed by Roscommon native Peter Kilmartin.
For Culture Night, a short trailer will preview, with the full documentary due in late Autumn.
As one grows old death is, in the most ironic sense, very much a part of life. Throughout rural Ireland local country radio stations play a daily radio segment titled ‘death notices’. At its most basic, this segment is an opportunity for listeners to find out about recent deaths in the community, and their funeral arrangements. Yet for those who listen the segment means so much more. “Death notices” is an exploration into the older generation of rural Ireland. A chance to view a rare glimpse of a vanishing kind. Those that rely on the humble radio as their source of information, news and gossip. This documentary takes viewers on a journey through the eager listeners of the station’s most popular segment. Questions of morality, life and love blended into one as we all begin to ask ourselves…. What will my death notice say?
