Shape Note Performances at The Friary Centre
This four-part a cappella music dates from the 16th through 20th centuries, and is characterised by haunting harmonies, traditional modes, raucous songs, serene hymns, fast fugues, and high-energy anthems. Also known as shape note, Sacred Harp singing takes its name from 'The Sacred Harp' songbook.
Featured in movies like Cold Mountain, Lawless and The Ladykillers, and by artists like Bruce Springsteen (Death To My Hometown), Sujan Stevens (Idumea) and Rhiannon Giddons (Wayfaring Stranger), shape note music emphasises participation over performance, encouraging singers to gather for the joy of music.
All are welcome to watch or participate. Loaner books will be available on the day at The Friary Centre.
