Description:

The beautiful historic bells of Rowe St church have rung out over the town marking significant life events; births, weddings, funerals and other events both religious and secular since the 1800’s. Although located in a public building, the bell tower is hidden away at the top of a spiral staircase and most people walking past look up when they hear the bells but have no idea that there are people in the tower actually pulling the ropes. Rowe St church is one of only thirty seven towers in Ireland with a set of bells suitable for change – ringing, as the skill is called. The people of Wexford are very proud of the tradition.

On Culture night visitors will be welcomed at the entrance and guided up the narrow spiral staircase to the tower here they will be invited to sit and listen while the ringers demonstrate how it all happens. The bells themselves are further up the tower, separate from the ringing chamber. Expect to spend 20 minutes in the tower. Due to the fact that space in the tower is quite limited with the added danger of moving ropes, this event will not be suitable for children under 12.

Please arrive at 5pm , 5.30pm, 6pm and 6.30pm to join the group and places will be allocated on a first come basis.

Prospective bell ringers are particularly welcomed and should make themselves known to the tower leader. The last group will be admitted at 6.30pm.
