Description:

This Culture Night, join historian Richard Carson for Race and Place in the City, a 90-minute walking tour of Lower Gardiner Street and its laneways. Featured on RTÉ Lyric FM and presented as part of Culture Night from 2023–2025, the tour uses the stories of local buildings and places to invite participants to reimagine their relationship with the city and with one another.

Drawing on history, theology, and social commentary, the tour explores how colonial ideas became embedded in Dublin’s north-east inner city and how their legacy continues to shape the area today. Along the way, participants will discover unexpected stories, from a local wedding that united two nineteenth-century colonial worlds on opposite sides of the globe to the surprising history of the site now occupied by Store Street Garda Station, revealing that Dublin’s so-called “new communities” are far from new.

Previous guests have described the tour as “mind-blowing” and “brilliant”, with one participant remarking, “I will never look at these streets the same again.”
