Storytelling of The Stolen Child – The Fairy Changeling in Irish Folklore’

Online

Portlaoise Library are delighted to present ‘The Stolen Child – The Fairy Changeling in Irish Folklore’. To celebrate Culture Night 2021, the staff at Portlaoise Library showcase the haunting lyricism of one of WB Yeats most famous poems, The Stolen Child. Taking place on the Laois Libraries Facebook page, the event will kick off at 5.30pm with a reading of The Stolen Child followed by an in-depth look at the folklore legends which inspired Yeats at 6.30pm. We will look at how The Stolen Child follows the legends of Fairy Abduction and the Fairy Changeling through the eyes of the fairies themselves, as they attempt to entice a child to come away with them to the ‘waters and the wild’ of Fairy. Both the danger and the lure of the fairies will be examined as they attempt to influence and manipulate the vulnerability and trust of the child to seemingly idyllic fairy hills. We will also look at the reason such superstitions arose and the protective measure desperate families undertook to safeguard against the supposed ‘Otherworld’. Join us from 5.30pm at www.facebook.com/LaoisLibraries/
