The National Gallery goes truly global this year as we light up our Merrion Square façade again with the Drawing Project in collaboration with the French Embassy, featuring several top international artists. The Drawing Project will be online at 4pm and go live at 8pm. Inside, we present our stunning new exhibition Jack B. Yeats: Painting and Memory to explore the role of memory, loss, and reflections in Yeats masterpieces (places limited, prebooking required, free entry from 5pm to 7.45pm). Join our Through a Lens Tour of the Gallery collection at 4pm or see the Meeting on the Turret Stairs, voted Ireland’s favourite painting in 2012, from 6-8pm. Make sure to visit the newly opened Picturing People exhibition, a showcase of the Gallery’s collection of extraordinary Irish photography, with photos capturing people and communities from Mayo to New York. Admire the majestic Marriage of Strongbow & Aoife in the Shaw Room. Our excellent giftshop remains open to 8.30. You can prebook your ticket for free entry here.

Eve Parnell reads an extract from Somerset Maugham’s book, The Razor’s Edge. This book was one of the first Western novels to propose non-Western solutions to society’s ills. Its title comes from a passage in one of the Upanishads. ‘The sharp edge of a razor is difficult to pass over; thus the wise say the path to Salvation is hard.’

Accompanied by Katerina Speranskaya on Cello playing a new work inspired by Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony.
