There will be a 2 hour soft pastel workshop with participants on Culture night. Beginning with an informative demonstration on how to use soft pastels successfully and explaining the do’s and don’ts of the medium along with the different paper types to use. I will show the fundamentals of pastel painting, guiding participants to work from dark to light, teach gentle blending and how to build strong, textured pieces by introducing foundational techniques like layering, scumbling, hatching and feathering. Controlling dust and learning how and when to use a workable fixative spray to lock in layers will be all part of the process. The participants will leave with a finished pastel painting of their own, along with a greater understanding and appreciation of the medium when the workshop is complete.
