This unusual church, largely the work of John Semple, opened on Christmas Day 1831 to almost universal criticism. The Dublin Penny Journal of 1834 claimed that there was not “a spot in the church where the eye can rest without pain”.
One hundred years later, we find it the favourite church of Sir John Betjeman, who described it as ‘a cheerful Irish castle with a seaside rather than a fortress flavour.’ Come and decide for yourself whether it is glamorous or garish! You can see and explore this historic and extraordinary church, still in daily use as a place of worship.
