Description:

This Culture Night, visitors are invited to the Polish House to meet Casimir Markievicz, the prolific Polish artist who was at the heart of Bohemian Dublin in the early twentieth century, and husband to the remarkable Irish revolutionary Constance Markievicz.

Casimir and Constance will welcome guests and guide them through an exhibition exploring their lives, artistic achievements, and enduring legacy. They may even offer visitors a glass of wine along the way if they fancy!

While the name Markievicz is most often associated with Irish revolutionary heroine Constance, this exhibition shines a spotlight on the life and work of Casimir Markievicz (1874–1932), a painter, playwright, and larger-than-life personality – and his place in Dublin’s bohemian circles on the eve of the Revolution.

Together, Casimir and Constance helped establish key institutions including the United Arts Club and the Municipal Gallery, while Casimir’s plays were performed at venues such as the Abbey Theatre and the Gaiety Theatre.

The panel exhibition brings together compelling examples of Casimir’s art along with artefacts and photographs, drawn from major public and private collections in Ireland and Poland. It also explores links between Ireland, Poland, and Ukraine (where Casimir’s family lived), and the influence of Polish nationalism on Constance’s own political outlook.
