Materials Stressed: Workshop with Eimear Murphy

as part of the exhibition:

Less Stress More Success

Live Workshop via Zoom with Eimear Murphy

This workshop is suitable for teenagers and adults, and younger children should join with adult guidance.

Eimear Murphy observes how we relate to materials and how this mirrors our emotional

state. There are two types of knitters; loose and tight. The loose knitter will knit in ample stitches, lines begin to flow. The stressed knitter will knit tightly and get their needles stuck in their weave. Processing her materials through stressful methods, Eimear creates artwork to understand how we connect with, and through materials.

In this workshop Eimear Murphy will facilitate the exploration of the materials around us through our sense of touch. Using materials found around the house, this workshop will focus on the sensory and textural experiences of things.

The workshop is not about making ‘artworks’, but using touch as a method of thinking and reflecting, whether part of an artistic practice or simply being present in this material world.

Eimear Murphy is an artist working between Dublin and Louth. Her practice encompasses public sculpture, gallery-based exhibitions and engagement through art-based activities. She is passionate about exploring our inherited knowledge of ‘non-art materials’ and how humans use them physically as a connection to the past, the future and each other.

Graduating from NCAD in 2015, Eimear was awarded the graduate residency for Sculpture in Fire Station Artists’ Studios. During this time, she received a landmark sculpture commission from Dublin Port – Drop is on permanent public display in the Sculpture Garden, Dublin Port. Eimear received the Arts Council’s prestigious Next Generation Award 2018/19 and presented her first solo exhibition SHAPE, HEAP. thing in Droichead Arts Centre (2018). Notable group exhibitions include Sideways Movement, Return Gallery, Goethe-Institut (2019), Industry, Solstice Arts Centre (2018), Lacuna, Taylor Gallery (2017). Eimear’s works are held in the collection of OPW.

CONNECTED Sculpture Trail Virtual Tour

Online

The Kilkenny Arts Office commissioned a virtual tour of the CONNECTED sculpture trail to coincide with Culture Night and to enable those who cannot venture out on Friday 18th to appreciate the impressive array of sculptures on display throughout the city centre.

The virtual tour ties in with the original ethos of CONNECTED by allowing audiences to re-connect with culture and craft outside of a gallery setting. The trail celebrates our collective solidarity, connectivity, resilience and creativity in a changed world.

The trail opens up heritage gardens and courtyards at the heart of Kilkenny, and encourages participants to rediscover the city through fresh eyes. Beginning from the courtyard of Castle Yard and the Butler House Gardens, you’ll walk through Kilkenny Castle Park, Medieval Mile, and the Butler Gallery at Evans’ Home, as well as taking in art at shopfronts, hotels and unexpected locations.

Produced by Design and Crafts Council Ireland with Kilkenny County Council, Kilkenny Arts Festival, Kilkenny Civic Trust, OPW, Butler Gallery, Kilkenny Tourism, Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce and local business owners. If you cannot make it out this Culture Night, you can now explore the trail online through the virtual tour, just click on the link.
