Over the last number of years, Athy Sing and Sign have organised an Irish Sign Language (ISL) Festival every September, funded through Kildare County Council and the Creative Ireland programme. Due to COVID 19, the festival was reimagined into a visual and virtual event.
The visual arts component includes a new mural, by acclaimed street artist Solus, Derek O’Sullivan, which was installed in Athy in early September 2020. The ballerina wears a hearing aid and the mural is accompanied by the word ‘strong’ in text and ISL Alphabet.
Want to get involved? Ahead of Culture Night, send your suggestions for the ballerina’s name to ISLmuralathy@gmail.com. Get even more creative by striking a pose with, or inspired by, the mural, and send that to us too. Applications from all ages, abilities and diverse backgrounds are encouraged and welcome.
Please include contact details, including where you live. You may like to give some information about your pose which we may share on social media. Applications close at 12 noon on Thurs September 17.
On Culture Night, an independent panel will select a name from submissions, and select a photo winner two. The two winning entries will receive a signed print of the artwork by Solus.

In June 2020, Kildare Arts Service asked the public to nominate Kildare’s Covid Heroes: those living in the county and supporting others through the Covid-19 pandemic. Nurses, volunteers, shop assistants, frontline workers, postmen, teachers; anyone could be nominated. Visual artists with connections to the county then painted portraits of the Covid Heroes.
This event will see the newly commissioned works displayed for the first time. Join online for a chance to see the newest additions to the Kildare Municipal Visual Art Collection.
After the 18th of September you will be able to view the pieces outside the council chamber in Aras Chill Dara. Booking is required via the new county council booking system which can be accessed at www.kildare.ie/countycouncil.
