Kildare COVID-19 Notebook Documentary Film Online Launch

Online

As the COVID19 crisis unfolded, Kildare County Council were keen to provide some positive pro-active projects that could engage and inspire citizens of the county, particularly those who are cocooning and older people.
The ask? Sign up for an A5 moleskine project that will be delivered to your home. Fill it however you wish, capturing the COVID months in some way, and return it to us for digital scanning, to become a permanent archive for Kildare County Council, before the notebook is returned to the participant for keeping. Participants were advised that there was no ‘right’ way to complete the notebook – it could take the form of a written diary, notes, poems or stories, looking forward, or back, or reflecting on how it feels to live through these challenging times.
A well as the digital archiving, there was a desire to somehow share the project with participants and the public in a safe manner, as a public exhibition of the notebooks is not appropriate at this time. Funding was secured under Creative Ireland’s Positive Ageing and Creative Wellbeing Challenge Fund to create a documentary, with some of the older notebook participants, for online premiere screening on Culture Night, September 18th on Kildare Arts Service social media channels at 4pm.
Recording a selected number of participants on the film, in their own home, talking about their notebooks will add another layer to the project. 7 participants have been selected from across the county. Thanks to Anne Doyle, Marian Egan, Philip Fitzsimons, Lydia A. Foy, John Geoghegan, Elizabeth Kemmy, Paul Sheridan for their generosity in sharing their notebooks and their stories. This concept was created by Lucina Russell, Arts Officer who also produced the film on behalf of Kildare County Council. David Christopher Lynch directed, edited and coloured the film and was also Director of Photography.

ISL Mural Project Culture Night Competition

Online

Over the last number of years, Athy Sing and Sign have organised an Irish Sign Language (ISL) Festival every September, funded through Kildare County Council and the Creative Ireland programme. Due to COVID 19, the festival was reimagined into a visual and virtual event.

The visual arts component includes a new mural, by acclaimed street artist Solus, Derek O’Sullivan, which was installed in Athy in early September 2020. The ballerina wears a hearing aid and the mural is accompanied by the word ‘strong’ in text and ISL Alphabet.

Want to get involved? Ahead of Culture Night, send your suggestions for the ballerina’s name to ISLmuralathy@gmail.com. Get even more creative by striking a pose with, or inspired by, the mural, and send that to us too. Applications from all ages, abilities and diverse backgrounds are encouraged and welcome.

Please include contact details, including where you live. You may like to give some information about your pose which we may share on social media. Applications close at 12 noon on Thurs September 17.

On Culture Night, an independent panel will select a name from submissions, and select a photo winner two. The two winning entries will receive a signed print of the artwork by Solus.

Kildare Covid Heroes

Online

In June 2020, Kildare Arts Service asked the public to nominate Kildare’s Covid Heroes: those living in the county and supporting others through the Covid-19 pandemic. Nurses, volunteers, shop assistants, frontline workers, postmen, teachers; anyone could be nominated. Visual artists with connections to the county then painted portraits of the Covid Heroes.

This event will see the newly commissioned works displayed for the first time. Join online for a chance to see the newest additions to the Kildare Municipal Visual Art Collection.

After the 18th of September you will be able to view the pieces outside the council chamber in Aras Chill Dara. Booking is required via the new county council booking system which can be accessed at www.kildare.ie/countycouncil.
