Description:

This Culture Night, Grapefruit Moon Drama Group brings J. M. Synge’s powerful one-act play In the Shadow of the Glen to the intimate setting of Matt Molloy’s Yard Bar in Westport.

First performed in 1903, Synge’s play is a darkly comic and provocative exploration of marriage, loneliness, freedom and the restrictions placed upon women in rural Ireland. Set in a remote cottage in the Wicklow mountains, the story centres on Nora Burke, a young woman trapped in a loveless marriage to Dan. When Dan appears to die suddenly, Nora is confronted with the possibility of freedom — but what initially seems like an escape from an unhappy marriage quickly becomes something far more complicated.

Synge’s work is renowned for its distinctive language, humour and unflinching portrayal of rural Irish life. More than a century after it was written, In the Shadow of the Glen remains surprisingly relevant, raising questions about relationships, independence, social expectations and the choices available to women.

For this Culture Night performance, Grapefruit Moon is particularly interested in bringing Synge’s work out of the traditional theatre and into the community. After a successful summer run in Matt Molloy’s Yard bar, the venue provides an atmospheric and unconventional setting for the play, allowing audiences to experience the drama at close quarters. Rather than creating a formal divide between performer and audience, the pub environment creates an intimate theatrical experience where the audience becomes almost a part of the world of the play.

The performance also reflects the spirit of Culture Night: making culture accessible, bringing people together and celebrating Ireland’s rich artistic heritage in unexpected places.

Grapefruit Moon Drama Group is a local, grassroots theatre group committed to creating opportunities for people to participate in drama and theatre outside traditional theatrical.

The Culture Night performance will offer audiences an opportunity not simply to watch a piece of Irish theatre, but to encounter it in a setting that feels connected to the culture and community from which the play emerged. The atmosphere of Matt Molloy’s Yard, combined with live performance and Synge’s extraordinary language, creates a theatrical experience that is intimate, immediate and distinctly West of Ireland.

By presenting In the Shadow of the Glen in Matt Molloy’s Yard for Culture Night, Grapefruit Moon hopes to demonstrate that theatre does not have to take place behind the doors of a conventional theatre. It can happen in pubs, community spaces and other familiar places, bringing people together and allowing stories that form part of Ireland’s cultural heritage to live again in the communities of today.

A classic Irish play. A local cast. An unconventional stage. One unforgettable night of theatre.
