This Culture Night, the Irish Film Classification Office (IFCO) will be opening its doors for a special screening of the documentary ‘In the Opinion of the Censor’ followed by a Q&A.

The feature-length documentary tells the story of the Censorship of Films Act 1923 and how one canny term in that statute has allowed consecutive holders of the role of Film Censor to reflect the prevailing values of Irish society over the last 100 years.

In the documentary, John Kelleher, Ireland’s last Film Censor and first Director of Film Classification, presents and narrates the fascinating story of Irish film censorship. Drawing on contributions from historians, filmmakers, movie archivists and media commentators, as well as film clips from titles such as Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, Ulysses, The Graduate, and Monty Python’s Life of Brian – including scenes Irish Audiences would not have seen – John illustrates how the story of Irish film censorship mirrored the evolution of Irish society over the course of the last one hundred years.

Directed by Andrew Gallimore and Lydia Monin, this critically acclaimed film blends rare archival footage, expert interviews, and scenes from iconic censored films.
