Set in an Ireland of the 1830’s, Humphrey O’Mahuna (a very small farmer) has had a visit from the bailiffs, who are administering the collection of a compulsory tax known as tithes, in the parish of Knocknacroughery. They have taken a pig but he is still found short. He is hoping his son Bartley, who is saving to go to America, night help him out with the remainder. Meanwhile, young Bartley has more urgent dealings with the local matchmaker…
