History, memorialisation and the struggle for Irish independence in Galway

Offline

Outdoor ‘History Blitz’, commencing outside Galway City Museum at 5.30 pm

‘History, memorialisation and the struggle for Irish independence in Galway’ is the theme of the Museum’s Culture Night event this year, held in conjunction with the History Department at NUI Galway and Galway City Council.

So as to accommodate greater numbers in these Covid times, this year’s History Blitz goes walkabout to visit memorial sites relating to the 1916-23 period around the city centre. The featured speakers will take eight minutes each to talk about people who are commemorated in monuments and street names, or who represented it in literature. The talks will be filmed, and will form part of a web resource on memory and memorialisation in Galway. The event is coordinated by John Cunningham and Sarah-Anne Buckley of NUI Galway.

To take part, arrive at the City Museum at 5.30, prepared for all weather eventualities, to hear our first speaker, Cormac Ó Comhraí, talk about the memorialisation of Fr Griffin. Other speakers featured, live or online, include Marie Boran, Fergus Campbell, Jenny Farrell, Jim Higgins, Brendan McGowan, Linda Connolly, Anne-Marie Herron, Damien Donnellan, and John Cunningham.
