Embassy of Peru in Ireland

Inca Garcilaso and the Birth of the Mestizo Culture of the Americas

The Embassy of Peru invites you to visit its premises to view an exhibition on the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, an illustrious Peruvian who earned his place in history through his indefatigable work to bring about a greater understanding and rapprochement between the European and the Indo-American civilizations. Born in the Spanish Empire’s Viceroyalty of Peru in 1539 to a Spanish conquistador and an Inca noblewoman, he is one of the most famous early Mestizos in America; Mestizos is a colonial-era term for mixed-race in the Spanish racial hierarchy. Garcilaso’s unique perspective, detailed historical writings, and conflicting loyalties make him a truly fascinating figure. Before starting the tour, the Embassy will offer a typical Peruvian refreshment and as you leave, it will give away a small souvenir of Peru. Embassy doors open at 4pm and close at 9pm. Each group of maximum 7 people will have a 30-minute slot to walk through the exposition, enjoy a drink and collect their souvenir bag.
