DIAS Geophysics welcomes visitors on Culture Night to learn more about how Ireland holds a special place in the history of Earthquake studies thanks to the pioneering work of Robert Mallet, a mid-19th century engineer from Dublin who studied earthquakes and volcanoes. Robert Mallet produced the first artificial seismic waves at Killiney in 1849 and coined the term ‘epicentre’ for the point on the ground above the earthquake!
