City of the Sun God – Alessandra Azevedo

- Offline
Description:
"City of the Sun God imagines a dystopian future where fragmented survivors form a new tribe based on Afro-Brazilian culture and features traditional music alongside Afro-Futurism.
The piece depicts a day in this imagined future where we return to honouring the natural rhythm of our environment, and in our case the life-giving Sun. City of the Sun God connects traditions like Ancient Egypt and juxtaposes it alongside indigenous & Afro-diaspora society - current & imagined.
Choreographed & directed by Alessandra Azevedo, commissioned by 'The Last City' by Bettine McMahon, the piece features four dancers/theatre performers and two musicians & runs for 25 minutes.
Alessandra Azevedo is an Afro-Brazilian contemporary dancer, Capoeira performer & instructor from Salvador, Bahia. A reference for Afro-Brazilian culture in Ireland, Alessandra has worked with major European choreographers since relocating and is currently producing her debut solo show to be premiered at Dublin Fringe Festival 2024 after setting up the first 'Quilombo Terra' - a resistance movement based on de-colonisation and embodied, afro-indigenous knowledge.
This performance is part of an exciting programme of events at Wood Quay Amphitheatre for Culture Night Dublin 2023. Explore what else is happening at this venue in our web listings."
