Description:
Come visit the Bell Tower at Waterford’s
Christchurch Cathedral to see the bell
chamber where the ancient tradition of
bellringing happens. Bells have been
ringing in Waterford since the 1600s.
The first mention of bells in Christchurch is
from 1650, when bells were hidden in the
crypt of the cathedral to save them from
being taken as booty by the Cromwellians.
In 1668, six bells were cast and in 1721,
the Bishop of Waterford Rev Thomas Millar
had them recast. In 1872, the set was
completed to give us our current set, a peal
of 8 bells, with the largest bell (the tenor)
weighing just over 1 ton.
Tours will be every 15 minutes from outside
the Bell Tower at Christchurch Cathedral.
Due to the size of the tower, numbers will
be restricted to 20 on each tour.
