It Takes a Village is an African proverb that stresses the importance of us coming together to support one another. It is also the title of one of Catherine Young’s works with The Welcoming Project. We have all realised the importance of community this past year and this Culture Night, The Welcoming Project is back with a new dance film inspired by themes and choreography from ‘It takes a village’ and what community means to us. The piece is directed by dancer Eilise Sullivan, who has danced with The Welcoming Project since inception and is scored by Music Director Martin Scharer who created this original score for the live show featuring some of Ireland’s top musicians including Vyvienne Long, Cormac Breathnach, Brian Fleming, Jon Sanders and Jade O’Connor. This new film captures the essence and beauty of this community in Kerry, sharing their talents and thoughts and stressing the importance of coming together to be hopeful and resilient in darker times…as one family, together.
The Welcoming Project with Catherine Young Dance (Kerry Dance Artist in Residence) began on Banna Strand in 2016, as part of the Casement Project, celebrating the Centenary of 2016. The project is about welcoming newcomers to Ireland and Kerry and has included a large cast each year, over 50% of whom are in or have been through Direct Provision. The Welcoming Project brings people together, physically and culturally, through music and dance and focuses on what we share together.
