Culture Night begins in Cashel library with a bang! 

Join Paddy & Ricky of Big Bang Drumming as they introduce the rhythms and patterns of sound in a drumming circle at Cashel Library. This workshop will include hands on drumming, basic rhythm patterns, body percussion, play and respond, rumble & more. Big Bang Drumming encourage creativity, self-expression & fun during this year’s Culture Night!

Paddy O’ Mahony took a keen interest in Drums & Percussion at a very early age. Having trained in Concert & Marching Field Drums & Percussion from aged 9, he went on to perform & compete at various levels across Ireland, UK & Europe. He also plays guitar and has written, engineered and produced albums both for himself and others over the past 25 years.

Paul (Ricky) Ryan has trained in Concert and Marching Field Drums and Percussion and has also performed, recorded and toured across Ireland, UK and Europe with many acts over the last 25 years. Ricky is also a drum instructor at RikRok Drums at Bellvue Academy.

Open Mic Night with poet Breda Joyce

Cashel Library presents an Open Mic night with local writer/poet Breda Joyce.

Breda Joyce grew up in Co. Galway and taught at second-level in Kenya and in Cahir, Co. Tipperary. On retiring from teaching, Breda studied creative writing in UCC where she won her first poetry prize and graduated with an MA in 2020. Her work has been twice shortlisted for the Hennessy N.I.W., the Anthony Cronin and the Over the Edge Awards, for the Fish Lockdown prize 2020, the Francis Ledwidge award 2021 and the Desmond O’ Grady prize 2021. Her short collections have been highly commended in the Fool for Poetry Chapbook competition 2019 and 2020. Her poetry appears in various publications, anthologies and literary journals, the most recent being Poems for Pandemia and The Best New British and Irish Poets Anthology 2019-2021.

‘Reshaping the Light’ just published by Chaffinch Press is her first poetry collection.

Short Fiction, Memoir and Non-Fiction

Her short fiction piece, Unravelling was shortlisted for the WoW award 2019. A memoir piece, Magic conjured in huge silver tin on the shores of Lough Corrib, was published in The Irish Times in February 2015. Her memoir about her great-grandfather, John Henry Joyce and the Nine Irons, was long listed by Fish Publishing in 2013.  Another memoir piece, Thresholds was published in The Ireland’s Own Anthology 2010. A non- fiction piece Flying Aer Oileain features in the Junior Cert textbook Safari.
