BKDG will launch their Winter/Spring Season by performing readings from three plays currently in rehearsal: The Glass Asylum, The Memory of Water and The Good Father. Join the group as they celebrate Culture Night by giving a taster of productions to be enjoyed by local audiences over the coming months.
The play “The Glass Asylum”, a new one-act play written by group member Niall Ó’Muirí, deals with one young man’s struggle with his mental health. Niall has written this original piece with both humour and compassion and we get a glimpse into the issues patients and staff encounter as they deal with illness and the ghosts of one man’s mind. The show is directed by Tommy Murphy and the lead role of Raymond will be played by Tim Connaughton. The play will be performed in Redmond’s in October and will be the group’s first entry ever in the One-Act festival circuit in November.
The Memory of Water is a comedy-drama written by Sheelagh Stephenson about three sisters coming together on the eve of their mother’s funeral. The friction and misunderstandings that emerge throughout the evening generate comic moments as the sisters work though their differing memories of past events and childhood and ultimately bring the sisters closer. This play is also directed by Tommy Murphy and the ghost of the mother and the three sisters are played by Josephine Byrne, Elaine Jordan, Sinead O’Gorman and Margaret Farrell. The play will be performed in Bunclody Golf Club in November.
The Good Father, written by Christian O’Reilly was winner of the Stewart Parker Award. The play happens on New Year’s Eve at a house party where two very different strangers meet, each looking for a new start and to shake off the disappointments of the past. But champagne, cheap lager and their chance encounter leads to an unplanned pregnancy. Against all odds, can they make their newfound family a success? This play will be the group’s festival circuit entry in 2020 and will be performed in Bunclody in February. It is directed by Kieran Tyrell with the cast to be announced.
