Description:
Weaving is as old as song and to be found in cultures worldwide. It often contained secret messages from weavers to their own people. Historical records show evidence of a weaving tradition in Rathangan using wool, flax and cotton.
This two hour weaving event with artist Monica de Bath involves:
Thinking and shaping a secret message for your weaving
An Dlúth / The Warp
Demonstration of warping up a frame
Warping up frames in pairs.
An Inneach / The Weft
Selecting flexible natural materials - willow / rushes/ grasses/ herbs/ fabric
Demonstration of the basic weave Begin to weave
Weaving in pairs or individually
speaking different languages together
Thinking and shaping a secret message for your weaving
Finishing your tapestry sample and taking it off the tapestry frame
Gather together and present your Weaving to the group.
And maybe reveal a secret message.
What you will need to bring:
A sharp scissors
Flexible natural materials: From canal, woods, bog, field or garden etc.
About the artist facilitator: Monica facilitates an annual Tapestry weaving course with Oideas Gael, Gleann Cholm Cille. She learned how to weave from a Zimbabwean weaver.
