The harmonica workshop is a community event aimed at promoting musical education and appreciation of the harmonica instrument. The workshop begins with a recital featuring skilled harmonica player Cathal Johnson showcasing his talents and demonstrating the versatility of the instrument and accompanied by Gerry Savage on the ukulele. To encourage participation and engage newcomers, Through funding from the Galway City Council Culture Night, a giveway will happen with 12 free harmonicas on a first come first served basis. This gesture aims to provide individuals with the opportunity to own their own harmonica and begin exploring the instrument's potential and acts as a reminder of Culture Night 2023. Participants who receive a harmonica will then be guided through a basic harmonica learning session. The workshop instructors will teach them a traditional tune called "Steam Train Blues," which reflects the harmonica's historical connection with the era of steam trains. Cathal will break down the tune into manageable sections, explaining the techniques and notes required to play it effectively. Participants will have the opportunity to practice and receive individual guidance from the instructors, fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment. Through this workshop, participants will not only gain a basic understanding of harmonica playing but also experience the joy of creating music together. It serves as an accessible platform for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to explore their musical talents and develop a new skill.
