Athy Sing and Sign has organised an Irish Sign Language (ISL) Festival every September, funded through Kildare County Council’s Creative Ireland programme. However, due to COVID-19, the festival was reimagined into a Visual & Virtual ISL Festival this year. The visual art includes a fabulous new mural, by acclaimed street artist Solus Art, Derek O’Sullivan.
Solus explains that he likes to balance strength and beauty together hence the ballerina and the boxing gloves. It is also a symbol of overcoming obstacles. ‘They like to think that this mural will uplift each and every one of us and remind us that we are strong women and men and that we shall all overcome our common obstacle in society today and that is COVID-19’. The ballerina wears a hearing aid and the mural is accompanied by the word ‘strong’ in text and ISL Alphabet, promoting inclusiveness.
For Culture Night Athy Sing & Sign would like to celebrate this mural by creating a short film of their members signing the song ‘There’s Something Inside So Strong’ by Labi Siffre. They will have dancers, ballerinas and gymnasts – this mural epitomises STRENGTH & BEAUTY and we want to diver that message through their short film. Join in with them and sign the line ‘There’s Something Inside So Strong’ and remember that you are strong.
Special thanks to Mikey Elridge, talented filmmaker for filming, editing and producing this short film.
