Patrick Tunney was a prolific writer of patriotic ballads, articles and letters. He was born in Derrykillew, Westport (less than a mile from Cushlough Community Center) in 1887. He was a poet, songwriter, historian and political activist. In 1951, the Irish Independent described Patrick Tunney as “a prolific writer of patriotic ballads, articles and letters.” He was an ardent nationalist and a prolific contributor to local and national newspapers, having over five hundred songs, ballads and articles published”.
This play brings the audience some of Pat Tunney’s best-known poems, many set in the local area, in his beloved Mayo and some of his most popular ballads.
