Clare - Miltown Malbay

Áras Oidhreacht an Chláir

Mal's Bay in Art, Song and Music

Oidhreacht an Chláir will present a unique event, combining visual art and the song and music tradition of Clare in focusing on a creative exploration of the myths and folklore associated with the wild coastal landscape of West Clare.
Malbay, the bay west of Miltown Malbay, is named in mythology after the cailleach Mal. She fell to her death off Loop Head in her amorous pursuit of the hero Cú Chulainn and her blood stained the sea up to Miltown Malbay, while her head was washed ashore at Hag’s  Head.  Our event, Mal’s Bay in Art, Song and Music, will combine the creative responses of the visual artist and the traditional singer and musician to those legends in a complementary exploration of that treasure house of memory and imagination. It will
comprise a special art exhibition, Mal’s Bay in Art, by the outstanding young Liscannor artist Marie Connole, followed by Songs and Tunes from the West Clare Coast, featuring renowned local singer Joe Cullen and musicians Bríd O’Donahue and Sinéad O’Brien.

Mal’s Bay in Art : At 7.00pm, Marie Connole will introduce 15 of her Art Watercolour Paintings based on the myths and folklore of the coast of Clare.  With the aid of a powerpoint slideshow, Marie will talk of her work, focusing on the influence of local tales on her practice, both generally and in relation to the context and origin of each of the individual works. She will stimulate conversation and discussion with the audience. The aim is not alone to bring to life again, for the benefit of young and old, those residual Dindsenchas memories of the myths and legends surrounding the origins and names of local places, but also to nourish the artistic instincts and imaginations of the younger generation by exploring how in future years the creative possibilities of those intimate local traditions can continue to be mined. Marie is a visual artist, illustrator and teacher, who has exhibited widely in Ireland, including in the National Gallery, and in 2017 held a six-month solo exhibition in the Irish Arts Center in New York. She has won a number of awards in Ireland and Iceland, and her work features in several public collections.

Songs and Tunes from the West Clare Coast at 8.45pm will feature popular local singer Joe Cullen, who will sing songs by local poet Colm O’Gorman and others, and well-known musicians Bríd O’Donahue (tin whistle and flute) and Sinéad O’Brien (fiddle and tin whistle). It will be presented by renowned traditional singers Tim Dennehy and Róisín White.

It is hoped that the combination of these complementary creative perspectives will help to awaken new interest in the rich placename lore of Clare both on its own merits and as a resource for creativity.
