Mark Garry’s film explores the relationship between Irish travellers and settled communities in the middle part of the last century. Told through five song sections, the film adopts the theatrical structure of a Greek tragedy. An Lucht Siúil is performed partly in English and partly in Shelta (de Gamon/Cant), the language of the Irish traveller.
The songs were written by the artist as a poetic response to Ireland’s complex relationship with land and land ownership, and the relationships between the many people who share this land. Originally commissioned as a Percent for Art project by Roscommon County Council.
