Afloat & Ashore! TIDE Virtual Reality Experiences

The Tower Museum Learning Space

Free access to try the two new TIDE VR Experiences, funded by Interreg Atlantic Area. Visitors can put on a VR headset and explore two experiences linked to the region’s maritime history, each experience takes c.7 minutes.

‘Afloat & Ashore’ named after one of many incredible accounts of transatlantic voyaging written by Patrick Maxwell, a solicitor who lived in Derry at the end of the 19th century. This VR experience takes you on a journey aboard the steamship ‘The State of Nebraska’, from the port of Derry to New York, meeting original characters along the way.

‘Beware! Enemy Below!’ The second VR experiences captures the City’s naval story, transporting users back to the convoys bringing supplies to the Allies in 1918. ‘Beware! Enemy Below!’ will transport users into the shoes of a Royal Navy Lieutenant 1000 metres above sea level in a kite balloon, watching out for threats to the supply convoy from German U-boats and mines, as it nears the end of its long voyage from across the Atlantic around Malin Head into Lough Foyle.
